Size: 32mm
This pretty big darkling beetle got "head standing pose" immediately when I got closer and was trying to attack with a "secret spray" from a tip of the abdomen.

looks like
E. obscurus, but not sure if that species gets that far north.

E. obscurus is a vey big species (at least the populations in AZ I'd see were).

Further, I remember collecting this species in Harney County, and the specimen was easily the largest I'd ever seen of that genus.
