Cantharid? - Chauliodes rastricornis

Cantharid? - Chauliodes rastricornis
Katy Trail, Boone County, Missouri, USA
March 24, 2010
Size: Slightly over 2 inches
Found this immature Cantharid (?) along the Katy Trail. I picked it up and currently have it setting under my car to pick up and grab whenever I head home. Will try to set it up and raise it to see what I get. Any tips on raising Cantharids?

Corydalidae, 'hellgrammite'
it has hell, it has gram, it has a mite...

This excites me
Hopefully I can raise this thing all right.

Hmmm
Are they supposed to be found out of water? This thing was along a trail. Do I need to get it into some water? I'm confused...

According to
this site, pupation occurs "up to 50 feet from the water. Hellgrammites dig underground a few centimeters or may burrow under dead leaves, a rotten log or old tree stump. Here they change from larvae into pupae."

Don't know if this applies to all species, though.

It will happen soon!
All the corydalids I've found out of water have pupated fairly quickly after finding them. I've also found some in rotten logs already pupated. Make sure you let them pack themselves in tight and keep them a little damp, the one I found already pupated I had pulled out and it didn't develop correctly. Its wings got stuck as it was emerging and they ended up all wrinkly.

Sounds good.
I'll give it some soil and water and hope for the best.

i'm not sure -- they might well pupate in the soil
