Size: 25-30mm
Found in a chewed-out cavity on the flat underside of a log that I flipped over. Still dormant, but alive (moved a bit when gently touched).

Baldfaced Hornet (Dolichovespula maculata) - spring queen
The technical name for the overwintering cavity is "hibernaculum". Only true Hornets and the Baldfaced one do this routinely, the smaller yellowjacket species are more opportunistic.
A nice individual, with small white patches on the middle and hind tibiae - most specimens, even in the queens, have wholly black middle and hind legs.

Thank you for confirming my ID. She was very beautiful. I left her in her hibernaculum after I took my photos.
