Barnacle Scale - Ceroplastes cirripediformis - Female
A. D. Barnes Park, Miami, Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA
March 30, 2010
Size: about 5 mm diameter
By far the strangest thing I've encounter so far in the insect world. I saw this one Saturday at the park while bug "hunting" and thought it was a peculiarly symmetrical plant growth so did not take a picture of it. Later, while searching for a Mealybug ID on here I saw it in a pic and couldn't believe it was an actual bug. The following Saturday I rushed back to the park, found it again, and photographed it.
