Myrmecina colony - Myrmecina americana - female

Myrmecina colony - Myrmecina americana - Female
Shaw Nature Reserve near Gray Summit, Franklin County, Missouri, USA
March 30, 2010
Size: 2.75-3mm
This is the widely distributed Myrmecina americana. There are one or two undescribed species in NA, too, but this is the one people usually encounter, typically as singletons or a few extracted from forest litter. In this case, I turned a log that was detached from its bark on the lower side and found the ants in a small ovoid chamber between wood and bark. Not a great picture, but the first at the guide to show queen and larvae.
