twig gall on wild rose - Diplolepis spinosa

twig gall on wild rose - Diplolepis spinosa
Ackworth, Warren County, Iowa, USA
April 3, 2010
Size: ~25 mm diameter
Spiny galls on the twigs of a small wild rose (possibly Rosa blanda) in a grassy roadside. I found several larvae inside when I cut it open, some live and some dead. I saved a gall and will see if anything emerges later.

Diplolepis spinosa
Large multichambered stem gall found on Rosa blanda. I am actually quite interested in the contents that will be emerging from this...would it be possible for you to take some pictures of the wasps that emerge?

Yes
I will be happy to get photos of anything that emerges. Thanks for your ID!

Emerged
The wasps emerged and I just added a fourth photo showing a view of two individuals through the plastic rearing bottle (see comments on that page). I will get better photos later!

I know the caution that these might be parasitoids instead of the gallmaker, so let me know what you think.

more photos
I managed to pluck an individual from the bottle later that same day and got three photos of a male (4 mm long, black, no ovipositor) which I have added above.
