Baldfaced Hornet - Dolichovespula maculata
Durham County, North Carolina, USA
April 4, 2010
Size: about 1 inch
Does anyone recognize this wasp? It was hanging out on our lit porch this evening. Thanks.

Moved from ID Request.

Yes, D. maculata
A spring queen in all her glory!

I'm quite jealous. I spent the past few days searching in different areas for one, and did not even get a sighting

Looks like
Baldfaced Hornet (Dolichovespula maculata).

Let's see if others agree.
