Golden-orange Fly? - Scathophaga stercoraria - male

Golden-orange Fly? - Scathophaga stercoraria - Male
Atchison, Atchison County, Kansas, USA
April 8, 2010
Size: approx. 1/2 inch
I've never seen these before...and only this time did I see them on a cow patty. LOTS of patties? But only THIS one had them. Several had mates but most I believe were males.
They were non-aggressive nor were they very nervous. They did keep bottle flies away however.

Dung fly, genus Scathophaga.

Probably stercoriara
Probably the common species Scathophaga stercoriara. Few species are found in Kansas and the other common one has a distinct black patch on the fore femur.

Funny how a fly on dung...is.
