Pollen Wasp Pseudomasaris maculifrons? - Pseudomasaris maculifrons - male

Pollen Wasp Pseudomasaris maculifrons? - Pseudomasaris maculifrons - Male
Saguaro National Park West, Pima County, Arizona, USA
April 8, 2010
These males were hill-topping and defending their territories on the trail - about 1m per male, sometimes less.

I didn't get close enough for my 100mm macro lens. But the pattern is so bold, maybe they can be Ided anyway

Congratulations, Margarethe -
Now, try to find some Phacelia species with females collecting pollen & nectar. Though April seems to be this species' main season, females have been recorded into mid-May; would depend on flowering of Phacelia.

Moved from ID Request.

Correct.
I think this may be the only species that does the hilltopping.
