Found hundreds of these soldier beetles sitting, mating and feeding on aphids at forested park area.

quite plausible, but...
...i know there are dozens of smallish all-black spp. in Siberia -- no idea how many in the Pacif.NW, but definitely more than one

...that is pretty big group, that's why I wasn't sure on species level. They all look "the same".

yes, your kind msg reads fine, and --of course!!!-- i started a response right away... but never got to finish it, as the influx of easy-to-handle business mail that require simple wording and quick reaction is overwhelming... so 'social' letters (that take a quiet, relaxed afternoon/aftermidnight to complete) are often put on the proverbial back burner...
