near Grantsburg, Burnett County, Wisconsin, USA

Size: 2.5 inches
found on willow but not seen eating. Was very active and may have been looking for place to cocoon. Area is brush prairie with wide variety of plants.

This has thin black hairs
which might suggest basiflava, but it does not seem to fit that description. There is a species, cinnamomea - Cinnamon Tussock Moth - Hodges#8300 in Wisconsin, but we don't know what its caterpillar looks like. Maybe you can track that down.

Not an ID, but I'm wondering...
Could this be the Variable Tussock Moth, Dasychira vagans?



None of the images in the Guide is an exact match; however, I'm sure it's called "variable" for a reason. What's more there is a resemblance... down to the red dots on a some of the individuals.

Just a possibility to consider until an expert comes along.
