Sleeping bees - Augochlora pura - female

Sleeping bees - Augochlora pura - Female
Harms Woods Forest Preserve, Glenview, Cook County, Illinois, USA
April 10, 2010
We lifted up a log in the oak woodland and found a whole colony of sleeping green bees. We took their picture and covered them back up so they could go back to sleep. Didn't know what would be useful so we posted all four of these. Feel free to frass as appropriate.

Do they live in colonies
or just overwinter in groups in good places. Our wildflower season is just beginning so only a half dozen or so species available for nectaring.

How nice!
You got a whole aggregation, that is nice. I found one sleeping bee last winter, the remnants of one a year ago and a mother raising her family in another occasion, but never a whole bunch of sleeping ones like this one. I wonder when they start getting busy.
