Leaf galls on California Rose (Rosa californica) - Diplolepis polita

Leaf galls on California Rose (Rosa californica) - Diplolepis polita
Carpinteria Salt Marsh, Santa Barbara County, California, USA
April 10, 2010
Size: 3-5 mm diam, w/o spikes
Here's a wider shot of the spiky gall to try to show more of the plant. I think that's another pair of leaflets sneaking into the right side of the frame, which would mean that there are at least 5 leaflets, which would mean that if the plant is either California Blackberry (Rubus ursinus), or California Rose (Rosa californica), it is most likely the former. Correct? (Update: Oops. I had that backwards. More leaflets makes it the rose, not the blackberry.)

Looking like rose
The five leaflets in the foreground and the stout, recurved thorns on a reddish stem in the background indicate Rosa californica instead of Rubus ursinus, which would have three leaflets and weak prickles on a bluish stem.
