is this truly an undescribed species, or if I collected the beetle and sent it to you or someone else, could it then be identified to a named species?

i'm sure it's described, with 36 spp.know to date to occur in CA
my temp. no-taxon pages were introduced out of frustration [no experts on this group left after the untimely demise of Alistair Ramsdale] + to organize a bit the bulk of the unIDed pix & facilitate job of those who may [as likely as not] come after me to take care of the cantharid section
HOWEVER i encourage you to be relentless and shoot/post/collect them -- perhaps donating specimens to a Cali museum
