Differential Grasshopper - Melanoplus differentialis - male

Differential Grasshopper - Melanoplus differentialis - Male
Hershey, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 27, 2005

Melanoplus.
A spur-throated grasshopper in the mega-genus Melanoplus:-) This might be M. differentialis, the differential grasshopper, judging by the herringbone pattern on the hind femur ("thigh"). They are big grasshoppers (35+ mm), so if it was any smaller than that it is likely a different species. I like the composition of the image, the fusion of natural elements with man-made ones.
