Green Comma? - Polygonia faunus

Green Comma? - Polygonia faunus
Whitemouth Ski Trails S. of intersection of Hwys #1 and #11., Manitoba, Canada
April 11, 2010
I'd appreciate an i.d. confirmation/correction.
Thanks, Larry

Every time I look at this one, I see a Green Comma
not any other species; so,
oved from Commas, Question Mark.

Agreed, underside would make it much easier.
However, I think you are correct. Only two others are likely to have the small yellow spots in a dark border like this one, one being the Comma and the other the Progne. This is not P. progne, and to my eye, it looks much more like P. faunus than like P. comma. In P. comma, those yellow spots on the hind wing are usually crescent-shaped and not so round, more likely rounded in P. faunus. Also, the wing shape is a tad different from the average in the Comma. Even though I'm fairly sure it is P. faunus, the identification must be a bit tentative, it could be a Comma.

The shape of the wing indicates that this one is probably female.

Green comma
Thank you for looking at it
