Hunched over the computer, I'm puzzling over the ID of several spiders. Grandson Owen peers over my shoulder and volunteers: "Oh, those are Pseuton spiders." Before posting, I verify spelling with him, but am a bit skeptical as to the result since, at age four, he isn't that great a speller. (Personally, I have a hunch this is the marbled cellar spider Holocnemus pluchei, but what do I know?)

This is H. pluchei, the Marbl

This is H. pluchei, the Marbled Cellar Spider, identified by its diagnostic wide, black ventral stripe (visible in the other photo). Additionally, among California's pholcids, only H. pluchei has this unique "marbled" appearance. It was introduced from the Mediterranean region and is now widespread throughout the southwestern United States. This individual appears especially contrastingly marked, and based on its size is likely a juvenile.

It matters to the aphid! LOL!

I was so muddled with the spiders that I didn't want to put any real energy into the prey.
