The habitat I was sifting leaf litter for this one was in a forest, and mostly the leaves piled up against logs. The closest water was probably a couple hundred yards away.

I forgot to update this one,
I forgot to update this one, also an individual of Neohypnus beckeri,
Both of them came from litter sifted near a stream right? (A pattern of habitat preferences has yet to emerge for this species).
Cheers,
Adam

Thanks Tom, I've yet to collect this species and the known habitat ranges from forest litter to stream litter to dung (!). If I wasn't on my way to Denmark on Sunday I would be doing some May sifting (best overall month in northeast for diversity).
Keep your eye out for Xesto*linus abdomen*alis, a beautiful and rare Xantholinini that only comes out in May. Bright orange pronotum and elytra and jet black everything else (MUCH more contrast than the illustration in the revision). Nobody knows what it does and I don't think anyone's ever photographed it. It has been swept from a field but otherwise it just turns up in pan traps. Let's call it the halloween beetle, if only it came out in October.

Adam, you're making me want to get out looking for more staphs with species like Xesto*linus abdomen*alis waiting to be collected:-)
I'll have to keep up the sifting and maybe a little sweeping this month.
