What type of hornet? - Dolichovespula maculata

What type of hornet? - Dolichovespula maculata
Greensboro/Piedmont, North Carolina, USA
April 15, 2010
Size: approx. 2 in.
This hornet is building a nest on our porch-yikes! I could not ID it with other pictures because the yellow only appears at the bottom of the tail and not throughout the tail. Any ideas?

Japanese Hornet?
Mom called this a Japanese Hornet, but I don't know. Been stung on the spine by these. Leaves a knot.

Correct
And she is very far along with her nest already! I encourage you to try to coexist with them if they are in a low risk area

I wish we could--I'm all for
I wish we could--I'm all for beneficials! However, this is at the corner of our porch, and I'm afraid we will make them angry when we are hanging out there or when kids run through. I"m hoping to find a natural way to remove without having to spray all the chemicals.

Thanks to all for help with id!

If you
Remove the nest now (just knock it down and dispose of it), the queen should still be able to go elsewhere and start a new nest and it would save you the trouble of dealing with a whole colony later on. If she trys to start another nest in that same spot, then just chase her off again.
Better for you, and ultimately better for her

looks like Bald-faced Hornet
Dolichovespula maculata to me.
Wait for a wasp expert to be sure though.
