This was on the concrete next to a flower bed. It didn't fly away, but rather burrowed quickly into the mulch.

as Ken suggested; the exposed wings make it look unbeetle-like :)

Did a bit more looking...
Looks a bit like Platydracus, or maybe something in that vicinity:



But that's just a guess, and I could be way off, so please wait for an expert opinion.

A Rove Beetle of some kind, I believe.
