Phyllophaga obsoleta vanelleri - Phyllophaga obsoleta

Phyllophaga obsoleta vanelleri - Phyllophaga obsoleta
Chamblee, DeKalb County, Georgia, USA

Size: 17 mm

Phyllophaga obsoleta
The subspecies vanalleri (Saylor 1939) was established as a synonym of P. obsoleta by Woodruff and Beck (1). This should be placed as simply Phyllophaga obsoleta.

But...
was considered a valid subspecies by Moron, in a more-recent (year?) revision of the subgenus. I will have to hunt down the exact reference...when I do I will post it here.

Here it is...
Moron, M. A. 2006. Revision de las especies de Phyllophaga (Phytalus) grupos obsoleta y pallida (Coleoptea: Melolonthidae: Melolonthinae). Folia Entomologica Mexicana. 45 (1): 1-104.

This is the most recent reference I can find that makes note of the vanelleri form, so this is what I follow. I am content to follow Woodruff and Beck, since that is probably the best reference for America north of Mexico.

Ah
Thanks for pointing this out. The subspecies appears to be still in use, so we should probably leave it as such.
