Microschatia championi
Thanks Fran and Kojun.
The SBMNH Beetle Project lists two
Microschatia
species for California,
championi
and
inaequalis
. I looked at specimens of these species in the Essig Museum.
M. inaequalis
has bumpy elytra, whereas
championi
has smoother but more punctate elytra like the one in this photo (and matches the type specimen at Harvard).
All of the
M. championi
records at Essig are from Baja California, Mexico. This beetle was about 6 miles north of Baja CA.

Looks like a Microschatia. There is a photo in the harvard type database of M. cham*pioni that looks similar to this creature, but I'm not very familiar with the species in this genus.
