Super Fast Centipede - Scolopendra polymorpha

Super Fast Centipede - Scolopendra polymorpha
Riverside , Riverside Co., USA County, California, USA
April 18, 2010
Size: about 4 1/2 inches
We need help on an ID for this centipede found under a rock along our driveway. Also would like to know what is the best way to perserve them. We put this one in a jar with 70% Isopropyl after photo and he turned dark and discolored in a few days. We found another one a little bigger last night and would like to make sure to do the right thing to perserve it for the school project. I really need your expert advice. Thank you for all your help, Robin (Helping My Son)

Super Fast Centipede and discoloration
Bill Reynolds and everbody, Thank you for the ID and info on trying to perserve the centipede and it's color for school. Everyone at BugGuide has been very helpful, it's great!! Thanks, Robin

Scolopendra polymorpha (?)
Looks like Scolopendra polymorpha

These guys can pack a nasty "bite" if handled carelessly, but are otherwise harmless and beneficial as predators.

I recommend keeping them alive and feeding them crickets and small insects - then releasing them when done!

Unfortunately, they tend to discolor somewhat regardless of preservation method.
