Variation or different species? - Heterocerus

Variation or different species? - Heterocerus
New Hampshire, USA
Size: 4.6 mm
This beetle was one on four heterodacids or variegated mud beetles that I probably collected in 2004. They are all from south-central New Hampshire -- either Rockingham or Hillsborough Counties -- and probably came to my UV lights, were kept alive waiting for a photography session that never came, died, were preserved in alcohol, and have just recently been semi-resurrected for their day on the stage.

Because its dorsal and ventral habitus differ significantly from the other three, I am suspicious about its affiliations. Is it just a variation or is it a different species? Where is a heterocerid specialist when I need one?
