Callosamia HYBRID males (promethea F x angulifera M) - Callosamia - male

Callosamia HYBRID males (promethea F x angulifera M) - Callosamia - Male
Garner, Wake County, North Carolina, USA
August 12, 2002
These are the products of an incidental cross involving a female C. promethea and a male C. angulifera.

A female promethea was caged on the front porch and had drawn several males that afternoon but had not yet been paired. Later that evening while the porch light was on, an angulifera male seemed interested in not only the light but also the caged promethea. Close examination of the promethea suggested she was "calling". Due to the porch light, she must have been "fooled" into thinking it was earlier in the day and started to call. By 11:00 pm more than a dozen angulifera males were swarming the porch light and caged promethea...so she was allowed to pair with an angulifera male.

The larvae were for the most part unremarkable and promethea-like. The larvae were given a combo of sweetgum and tulip poplar which they readily ate. The cocoons were promethea-like but not well attached to the host (but more so than seen in angulifera)

The adults are also very promethea-like but do exhibit some angulifera-like tendencies.

Reciprocal crosses were attempted with limited success. Both sexes within the hybrid group appeared to be interfertile, however, the eggs produced by hybrid females usually failed to develop and the few that hatched did not live much beyond 2nd instar.
