Ron, thanks, mine looks like a dead ringer for that one you linked to.

Glad to help!
I'd forgotten that genus, but a post tonight called it to my attention.

Another candidate: Xylota
This one looks a bit better:

Again, I'm not familiar with eastern species.

Emerus?
I think so, but I'm not wonderful with eastern species. Did it have a bronze cast to it?

If that's the right genus, yours is a female. (Note how the eyes touch on Ted's male, but are separated on yours.)

Don't know
As to the bronze cast, I don't know anything beyond the picture.

Is there information on Emerus here? I couldn't find anything on a search.

Uh, make that Eumerus
Sorry for the misspelling. Info page is here: http://bugguide.net/node/view/11727

A couple things to check if you're browsing the syrphids:

1. Your fly has an enlarged rear leg (femur). Not many syrphid species do.

2. Do other candidate flies have a posture similar to yours? Not infallible, but can be a good indication.

Flower fly.
Nice image of a fly in the Syrphidae family.
