Narrow Searcher - Calosoma externum

Narrow Searcher - Calosoma externum
Parkwood, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
June 23, 2003
Size: 30 mm
I scared up this beetle from under leaf litter while doing yard work. The habitat was damp deciduous woodland. It was captured, chilled, posed, and released for this photo. This specimen was very large, about 30 mm in length (length corrected 2017--based on photo adjacent to scale).
(As of 2017, I had not encountered this beetle again.)

Color Pattern?
Are these beetles variable in color pattern? I found a calosoma beetle that looked exactly like calosoma externum, without the purple lines. It was found in North Carolina.

Wow
I LOVE the color scheme of this beetle!
