you never know when I'll look at a specimen and then look at the photos on Bugguide and be like "holy crap, that's what this is!".

Spider wasp.
Not a bad shot, Machele. This is a spider wasp of some kind (family Pompilidae). The teeth on the hind tibia ("shin") mean that it is in the subfamily Pepsinae. Beyond that, hard to tell at this point.
