Hippodamia variegata ? - Hippodamia convergens

Hippodamia variegata ? - Hippodamia convergens
Aromas, San Benito County, California, USA
April 26, 2010
Size: ~5mm total length
Found in our garden (live oak/chaparral habitat). I'm reasonably sure this is Hippodamia variegata, but I always like to have confirmation when possible.

Hippodamia convergens, I'd say
The pronotum of H. variegata has round spots, not long converging lines like this. This is, literally, a textbook pattern for H. convergens: the three small dots on the basal area of the wing cover and the larger, rectangular spots on the rear area perfectly match Figure 152 in E. Chapin's classic work on the genus, "Review of the New World Species of Hippodamia Dejean (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)."

Thank you Abigail
for the species ID. I agree, it matches H. convergens much better than H. variegata.
