Carolina Sphinx - spread - Manduca sexta

Carolina Sphinx - spread - Manduca sexta
Ailsa Craig, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada
September 4, 2005
I hadn't seen one of these around here before, and now that tobacco farmers are switching to Cannabis in southern Ontario, maybe I won't see another.
Or maybe they're just getting started.

Cannabis?
Do you mean Cannabis sativa? Like in marihuana; Really?

Yes, hemp
The plants are spaced about twice as close as corn, and shoot straight up, over your head. It's tough to walk through a commercial field because the rows are so close together. THC content is next to zero. Silly overkill story but illustrative photos here.

Cannabis
has been grown probably since early European settlement of the Americas as a fine crop for production of fiber (hemp) and oil. The founding fathers of the US probably grew it on their farms! Production continued right up through World War II when much of the rope used by the military was made of hemp. Many places in Wisconsin still have 'ditchweed' growing wild, left over from the hemp farms of that time. Unlike its genetically selected offspring, it would not at all be useful for the drug industry, but would be a great source of fine oil, etc. The story of hemp is a fascinating read.

Hemp
I know.. it's about insects, not plants... but..

Hemp also plays a very important role here in Lancater County PA history. In fact, there's a whole section )"township" here called "hempfield". Unfortunately, growing it is now illegal. I guess they fear (probably correctly) that some knuckle-heads will try and sneak in the potent stuff in between rows.
