Hemipteran Gets Neuropteran - Zeugomantispa minuta

Hemipteran Gets Neuropteran - Zeugomantispa minuta
State Line Lookout, Bergen County, New Jersey, USA
September 21, 2009
Assassin Bug (Reduviidae) Pselliopus cinctus with Mantidfly (Mantispidae) Zeugomantispa minuta.
If confirmed, this is the northernmost Zeugomantispa minuta on BugGuide. One in southern NJ in 2006, one in southern PA in 2007.
Each of these is about a hundred miles south of this site. Otherwise, all submissions are from southern states.
Moving north was not a good career decision for this individual. Pity. They are weirdly beautiful.

Zeugomantispa minuta
I have a Zeugomantispa minuta in my possession right at this moment, caught today in Southern NJ, Pitman, Gloucester County. Beautiful creatures, indeed!

Image location.
Thanks for the move. I thought it would be better in the Mantidly species page because it is so rare in this location and also marks a BugGuide geographic limit for this species. I moved it there.

Sure is a well done photo. S

So much is in focus.
Both bugs are so beautiful.

Beautifil bugs
Thank you, John. They are two unusually striking insects.

you're right on both ID counts
chilling scene!

Chiller
I am more or less inured to the everyday violence of the insect world around us, although I still shudder at some of the horrific parasitism that is so much a part of that world.

Thank you for the species' confirmations.
