Pearl Crescents - Phyciodes graphica - male

Pearl Crescents - Phyciodes graphica - Male
Batesville, Uvalde County, Texas, USA
April 28, 2010

Just noticed this fellow
The one with the wings open is a Vesta Crescent, and so I'm going to put it with that under represented species here. The other one is probably indeed a Pearl Crescent. One character that helps to tell the difference is in the lower outer corner of the front wings. On the Pearl Crescent there will be a dark spot in the center of the orange spot. In the Vesta Crescent there is rarely any trace of a dark center there (though there may be a bit of a black center in the lower middle orange spot). Also, the Vesta Crescent has a very "complete" pattern of dark lines, though some female Pearl Crescents have it just as "complete". Also, Pearls average a bit larger, but that is no so easy to judge in most photos.

Moved from Pearl Crescent.

Yes,
They both appear to be Pearl Crescents, Phyciodes tharos.
