Sleeping Nomada - Nomada australis - female

Sleeping Nomada - Nomada australis - Female
Montrose, Laurens County, Georgia, USA
April 27, 2010
Size: unrecorded
Found clinging to pine needle in wind approaching 45 mph. Everything was grounded and I got lucky enough to catch this shot.

Moved
Moved from Cuckoo Bees.

Nomada australis female
erigeronis species group. Note entirely red metasoma. Nearly all ruficornis group females would have some yellow spots although these might be very obscure or inconspicuous (e.g., in N. lehighensis).

separated by articulata by row of relatively long black spines at apex of hind tibia (visible in highly zoomed view image).

Also australis is an expected species in the SE USA as its name suggests, although the two are broadly sympatric.

An amazing shot given the high winds.

Many nomadines sleep attached to stems with their mandibles.
