Speranza quadrilinearia - Macaria quadrilinearia - female

Speranza quadrilinearia - Macaria quadrilinearia - Female
In Westwood; elevation 5100ft, Lassen County, California, USA
September 18, 2008
Size: Forewing length 16mm
Although found four months later (within the "season") than my previous Speranza quadrilinearia photo, and although somewhat different in appearance, I believe this moth may also be Speranza quadrilinearia based on photos at MPG for Speranza quadrilinearia - Hodges #6288. Of course I have erred before - so comments are welcome!

6288 - Speranza quadrilinearia
Excellent match for Vargo specimen at MPG and for a specimen shown in the recent MONA monograph on the Macariini. The monograph gives a fairly narrow flight period in July and August but I doubt that the dates known to the author were comprehensive for the species.

Your other photo might not present a problem by its early date for the same reason. But the 12mm size you mention is not realistic for a species with a forewing length of 12-16mm.

I can't find a suitable candidate in the monograph for that specimen. I think it will have to be looked for in collections. I suppose a runt is always possible. The coloration along the costa is interesting. I wonder if it might be an undescribed species.

Error in measurement!
Sorry Bob, a typing error. I meant to type "22mm" instead of "12mm".
