Wingless Scorpionfly - Apterobittacus apterus
Marin County, California, USA
April 29, 2010
Size: 23 mm body length
Found crawling on French Broom. When I found it, my faulty memory told me there were already tons of photos of this species on BugGuide, so I didn't get any pictures of it alive. This is a photo of the distinctive Mecopteran face, and it also illustrates another interesting feature that I had no idea existed - the antennae appear to be fused near the bottom. Is this actually the case with this species, or is mine unusual?
