Size: 5 mm
A colony of these has been living around my deck for the past few years. They always trail across the railing. Workers vary in size and color. Not all have red like this

just wondering if it may be Camponotus chromaiodes?

 
I don't think so.
V. v. -- Can you tell us the size, preferably in mm., of the largest workers of this you see.

(Later) If 5mm. then one of the subgenus Myrmentoma. C. discolor, C. nearcticus are possibilities, but can't say without a clearer view of the sides of the head and their hair pattern.
