thanks for adding the dorsal, Jody.
i referred your posting to Dr Cristiano Lopes-Andrade, he's really good with ciids -- let's be patient, many experts are waaay out of their desks this time of year [although any season's good in Brazil, where C. L.-A. lives]

Photography assistance
Please Jody, let people help you a little with your photography. A few tips would help you improve your images dramatically, I assure you.
It is true that your camera has severe limitations; but so far I can tell you that your Kodak easyshare CX7530 allows you to use the macro at a distance of 5 inches; with 5 Megapixels that means that you can take relatively decent pictures of subjects as small as 4 or 5 mm without trying to use a microscope or zoom or anything like that. You would get more detail and much better color and contrast if you did it that way.
If you submit your questions in the photography forum you could get a lot of help and would end up happier with the results. Vassili would also be happier because he values much of your stuff and feels frustrated that he can't help you more.

beatriz
i was wondering if a pentax ei-200 would be better than the camera i use now- my dad has on of these

Apparently not
Your camera has more pixels (5 MP) than your dad's (2 MP); this allows you to enlarge the image a lot more and to crop it tighter. It has a higher f-stop (5.2 as opposed to 4.0) which gives you a little more depth of field, very important in macro photography. Finally your macro lens seems to be a little better than that of the pentax.
Now, for the good news, if we can work this out: I will be in North Carolina during the last week in May and plan to visit a friend of mine, who by funny coincidence lives just two blocks from your house and knows your family.
Perhaps you and I and your parents can arrange for us to meet and we can work on how to use your camera or we can use mine for some of those precious specimens that Vassili would like to see in more detail.
I will get in touch with you and your family by e-mail to see if we can arrange something, OK? Or you can e-mail me any time, the address is on my account page.

wow
that sounds great- thanks Beatriz

wholeheartedly seconded
please take Beatriz's advice -- it's a very good one. (She also managed to describe how i feel about your pix better than i ever could.)

thanks Beatriz and Vassili
ill do so
btw Beatriz- it wasn't that i was ignoring your requests- i just kept forgetting- sorry :(

ciid? dying to see a sharper pic, and a dorsal, too

Certainly a Ciidae
You're right, that's a ciid! Possibly a Malacocis, but it doesn't look like the unique North American species in the genus, Malacocis brevicollis. So I prefer to tell it Malacocis sp. A photo of the underside would help.

Congratulations, Jody! This ciid genus is not frequently collected.

thanks Dr Cristiano
