Hopper ID - Platycotis vittata
Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA
May 5, 2010
Size: 6mm
This beautiful little hopper was attracted to the light on my front porch. Maybe the host plants are the large oak trees in my area. I placed it on an oak twig to shoot the images. First one of these I've seen and when I find creatures this beautiful, it reminds me why I became interested in macro phtography.

I have more image to process and will add them later when I get time.

Moved

Appears to be
the "hornless" variety of the Oak Treehopper, Platycotis vittata.

I will move it, provisionally, to the species level, as I've been told that Dr. Hamilton wants us to do this with tentative IDs.

BTW, it is, indeed, a beautiful shot.

Thanks Ken!
The hornless variety seems to be less common. I'm surprised they are the same species as the horned type which are slightly larger.

Absolutely stunning photo...
Of a truly beautiful insect! There really are a number of amazing Hemiptera. Kudos again Scott! I can't wait to see the other images.

Appreciate The Kind Words...
Dennis. It is interesting that I found this on my front porch at 1am in the morning! What a nice surprise.

I'll see if I can get the rest done today.
