Tiger Bee Fly - Xenox tigrinus

Tiger Bee Fly - Xenox tigrinus
Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, Orange County, North Carolina, USA
July 14, 2005
Size: 19 mm length
This individual was resting quite calmly on a damp dirt and gravel path. In a different frame, I photographed this individual adjacent to a ruler (it was very calm) and the body length was 19 mm. These are large bee-flies! The references I had seen for this species previously had put the length at 12-15 mm. I've added a note on this in the guide page.

Size
I have two specimens of this species. The larger one I have posted on here and is 18mm, collected in PA. The other one is 15mm, collected in VA. Both are on the large side, so I think it is pretty common for them to be over 15mm. I think this species is really swell:-)
