paper wasp - Mischocyttarus mexicanus - female

paper wasp - Mischocyttarus mexicanus - Female
Dunedin, Pinellas County, Florida, USA
April 17, 2010
I observed these wasps tending their nest on the outside of an awning. Three wasps were commonly present. The covered tube in the lower left had just been recently capped. However they made the error of building this nest on the outside of the awning and several days later the nest was destroyed, probably by a mockingbird. But they were not deterred. The two remaining wasps started a new nest the next day under the awning which should be a safer place for them to raise their brood.
