Robberfly - Triorla interrupta - female

Robberfly - Triorla interrupta - Female
Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, Orange County, North Carolina, USA
July 14, 2005
Size: length 25 mm
I believe I got a good measure of the length of this female Robber Fly by photographing a scale at the same magnification as one shot, the camera having been set to manual focus. It was quite large, 25 mm from head to tip of ovipositor.

Thanks for help with identification--see comments.

Robber
This is a fooler from this angle. This is a female Triorla interrupta. Similar look to the banding when seen through the wings as Promachus but colors in browns and grays and that more rounded female terminus.

Thanks, Asilidae subfamilies
Thanks, I think I'm beginning to learn these. They must be common here in NC, we have several examples, but none from other states yet.

When you get a chance, it would be great if you could check the assignment of Asilidae genera to subfamilies here on BugGuide--I just did that today, and it was a bit of a rush job. I've followed various checklists that you've done, basically.

Subfamilies
All looks right except Ospriocerus and Dioctria should be in Stenopogoninae.

And Triorla should be a very widespread eastern robber.

Thanks, one more robber
Thanks, I'll correct those genera out of place. As I said, it was a rush job!

Apologies if I've asked about this one before--is this a male Triorla?

Thanks for any ideas.
