Tiny caterpillers - Neodiprion? - Neodiprion

Tiny caterpillers - Neodiprion? - Neodiprion
Ham Lake, MN, Anoka County, Minnesota, USA
May 9, 2010
They're a little blurry, but were so tiny!

Moved

Genus ID: Neodiprion
Based on host and location, definitely Neodiprion. But they have not developed mature larval pigmentation, so I cannot ID further. For May larvae in MN on pine, most likely N. nanulus nanulus, N. sertifer, or N. pratti

Moved

probably Diprionidae
.

Moved from ID Request.

Can't be 100-percent certain...
but they could be sawfly larvae--maybe something in/near Neodiprion.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction..
Is it that they all just happened to be eating that pine needle together, or will they stay in the same spot as they mature? If they stay in the same spot, I could photograph them as they mature, since the tree is in my yard.

They won't stay in the same spot
because they'll have to keep moving to find fresh needles to eat. I expect that they'll stay on the same tree, though, and that you'll be able to find them by following the defoliation they produce. Good luck!
