Jerusalem Cricket2557 - Ammopelmatus

Jerusalem Cricket2557 - Ammopelmatus
Escondido, San Diego County, California, USA
October 9, 2005
Stenopelmatus? Found on living room carpet.

It definitely looks like all our other Jerusalem Crickets
here in the guide. We don't have this family divided into genera yet.

Stenopelmatus
There appear to be just two genera in this family in North America--Nearctica.com lists Ammopelmatus and Stenopelmatus.

From this page on endangered insects of California, it appears that both species of Ammopelmatus are rare and local:
Kelso Jerusalem Cricket--Ammopelmatus kelsoensis
Point Conception Jerusalem Cricket--Ammopelmatus muwu

Those species names both refer to isolated areas in California (Kelso Dunes in the desert and Point Conception, along the coast), so I would presume they are not widespread.

Genus Stenopelmatus is the only one described by Helfer (1) and Capinera (2). See also images at USDA-SEL and at SINA, though they have no real description other than a brief one of related families on this page.

So, to make a short story long, as I am so wont to do, I think all of the images here are of Stenopelmatus. I wrote a new guide page for genus Stenopelmatus and moved all existing images under it.
