The caterpillar seemed indecisive about settling into a pupation site. It descended from its food source to the tank floor but returned and ate again. After descending a second time and climbing a piece of wire screen placed there in advance for it, it spent many minutes roving sideways, back and forth within a small area of the screen, before it chose a spot 15 cm (6 in.) from the floor.

I missed the moment that the caterpillar began to construct its "safety belt," but I photographed some of the process. This ventral shot, taken at about 3:30 p.m., shows it working on the belt.
