Pearly eye? Brown? - Lethe anthedon

Pearly eye? Brown? - Lethe anthedon
Rochester, Monroe County, New York, USA
July 14, 2009
I've had this ID'ed since the picture was taken, but now have doubts after looking at my field guides.

Moved from ID Request.

Northern Pearly-Eye, Enodia anthedon
I readily recognize your dilemma id'ing this critter using a field pic and follow up using field guides; I do know Pearly-eyes are variable and some individuals deviate from the norm, making it even worse (i.e. size and number of eyespots..pattern intensity..etc.). Because there can be a lot of overlap in traits, these butterflies can be a bit of a challenge, especially in an area where you might encounter all three ;)

However, given your locality, I feel confident this is a Northern Pearly-eye,.... but I'm always open to the possibility of populations occurring beyond known ranges.

If it's any consolation, I even have a few Enodia specimens in my collection that still have "?" by the id's ;)

Thanks
It looked to me very much like the smoky version of the Eyed Brown, but a little further reading suggested that would be unlikely to appear here.

Adding to the confusion was that my individual looked darker than the field guide illustrations.
