Mulsantina luteodorsa (was: Harmonia? Lady Beetle) - Mulsantina picta

Mulsantina luteodorsa (was: Harmonia? Lady Beetle) - Mulsantina picta
Montrose, Laurens County, Georgia, USA
May 4, 2010
Size: unrecorded
My first thought was it belonged in the Spotless bunch, but, I dunno....It looks more and more like an exotically-colored Harmonia. Found on trunk of pine tree.

I agree this seems quite like a teneral M. picta
If the pronotum was white and black and not yellow and brownish, I'd be better with luteodorsa as a suggestion :c Does the pronotum show variation in markings or is Gordon's figure consistent in all specimens?

I'm looking at over a dozen spmns that are a match for this photo in the TAMUIC that Dr. Joan Chapin pegged as picta, e.g.

I don't think the pronotal pattern rules out M. picta...

Painted Lady Beetle - Mulsantina picta

Also, pronotal pattern not a particularly good match for Gordon's drawing of M. luteodorsa

Mulsantina luteodorsa!
I'll happily admit I was wrong here, because M. luteodorsa is a new species for BugGuide.

A. bipunctata always has a black area in the center of the head with small white markings on either side. The white crown-shaped marking on the head is typical of Mulsantina, and the C-shaped pronotal markings on a Mulsantina sp., plus the solid light-orange elytra and the southeastern US location, add up to Mulsantina luteodorsa.

I've been scavenging BG for this species, and I'm thrilled to find one, even if I do have to eat some humble pie!
