Hickory nut ants - Tapinoma sessile

Hickory nut ants - Tapinoma sessile
South Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
May 15, 2010
A whole ant nest contained within a single hickory nut. These don't look like acorn ants (Temnothorax) to me based on the images already in the guide, but what do I know?

Moved from Ants. Great, I was thinking a Lasius of some sort. Is this a typical place to find them?

Dolichoderinae: Tapinoma
I must have been drinking when I ID'ed this earlier as the superficially similar Lasius alienus. The tapering of the gaster and more flattened profile of both mesosoma and gaster point to Tapinoma sessile. This ant will inhabit virtually any preformed cavity it chooses! (But L. alienus also occasionaly inhabits acorns.)
