WBC owlet moth - Melipotis agrotoides - male

WBC owlet moth - Melipotis agrotoides - Male
World Birding Center HQ at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, Hidalgo County, Texas, USA
Photographed in November 2005. Seems pretty clearly like a Noctuid, but I see several subfamilies to which it has at least a passing resemblance, no clue how to take it to genus or species.

LRGV birder/butterflier David Dauphin helped me take this photo by holding a mirror down below and reflecting sunlight up into the normally shady corner where this moth was hanging out.

Moved
Moved from Melipotis novanda.

8609 Melipotis novanda?
See arizona -- or at least something close?

right on!
Hey, that does look like a perfect match. Also matches another image
here

Thanks guys!

Yes, and to give MPG proper credit,
we must confess that's where we got our ID! We were searching through Drasteria thinking this might be in that genus and luckily Melipotis was nearby on the same page. Just couldn't figure out how to link to the image on MPG rather than the entire page, so went searching for another image. Nice addition to BugGuide!
On a separate question, would you mind if we notified you on occasion of some Texas images on BugGuide that need some ID help? South Texas is so far from the eastern US forests, with such a different fauna, that it seems most people don't even hazard a guess for the identity of images from down there.

sure
I would be happy to check out images from Texas, especially the LRGV. I'm still new and not likely to be a big help directly, but I at least am making contacts to lots of the specialists in this state (thanks mostly to state entomologist Mike Quinn), and can try to call interesting photos on the Guide to their attention...

Give Bruce Walsh the Credit....the photo at MPG is.....
.... a small copy of his photo on his Arizona moths website. Now, about linking to MPG. Please do not link to anything at the OLD address www.origins.tv. The site has been moved to mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/Plates.shtml and the old site will eventually disappear and those links will no longer work. For linking to single photos at MPG: Right click on the photo and then select "properties" and copy the URL that appears, such as http://www.origins.tv/MothPhotographersGroup/Files/45/West/BW8609.jpg and you will get This Photo.
