Eleodes? -
Eleodes acuticauda
Orange County, California, USA
May 15, 2010
Size: about 20mm (est)
I think this must be an Eleodes sp. Of note, there are two white bands along the final antenomeres (don't know if thats useful or not).

Eleodes acuticaudus LeConte?
Given the area and body shape it is probably that species, common in the Los Angeles area

I also agree that this is Eleodes...
The way the abdomen tapers towards the end doesn't look at all like the
Coelocnemis
I'm used to observing. I have no idea whether the antennal features are at all significant with this group, but in case you hadn't noticed, there is a small, spiky projection (visible on the left femur) which may be useful in narrowing down the
Eleodes
species options. (I'm not suggesting your specimen is necessarily this species, but see
here
for an example showing the femoral projection).

Good eye Harsi
I hadn't noticed that character. Looking through the guide I notice that a few species possess this femural projection, so maybe this, coupled with the antenna bands, abdominal and pronotum shapes might be enough to get this one a more specific ID someday. For now, though, it is good to know that I got genus right! Moving to Eleodes for now.

Eleodes
Agree with genus; do not know your local fauna well enough for a species. I do not think this is Coelocnemis (which sometimes have a similarly-shaped pronotum).
