Size: large
I'm new to this site and don't know enough about bugs to search for answers. Can you tell me what kind of dragon fly this is and maybe the basics on answering some of these questions myself. I love this Guide.

Great! Thank you!

i think a Darner, Family Aeshnidae
of some kind. I'm not positive though. Best to wait for the dragonfly experts.

why did you think it was a Da
why did you think it was a Darner? You were right, of course, but what made you think that?

Aeshnidae
In a nutshell, darners (family Aeshnidae) are generally large, elongate dragonflies that always have their eyes touching dorsally along a seam for most of the head. Swamp Darners are very big, even for darners. They show greenish thoracic stripes, thin green rings on the abdomen, and deep bluish eyes. Their wings are frequently amber-tinted.

There are many quality books on Odonata available now, and several soon to be released. Dragonflies Through Binoculars by Sid Dunkle is a good one, though the pics are rather small. The Stokes Beginner's Guide to Dragonflies would also be a good start, though it is not exhaustive.
